Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services

EMS Explorer Post 247 was established as a joint effort between Austin-Travis County EMS and the Boy Scouts of America Learning for Life Program. The program serves youth from 14 to 21 years old. We currently have 18 active members on the roster ranging in age from 14-20. Two of our youth are currently in the Austin-Travis County EMS hiring process and are ranked in the top ten. One is a 20 year old female the other is an 18 year old male. We have two additional Explorers that will be going through the next hiring process in September.

The program is designed to develop youth into young adults with an emphasis on the EMS career field. Explorers are educated in EMS skills/ knowledge both in the classroom and wilderness areas, team building exercises, rappelling, and riding out and observing on EMS units. The youth are also expected to perform community service hours for the Department that includes teaching take 10 CPR, public relations events, and first aid for boy scouts.

Tomorrow is the final day of a 6 day program that ends with a skill and knowledge competition at Zilker park.
